Advanced Diploma in the Supervision of Family & Systemic Psychotherapy

In 1996 the Association for Family and Systemic Therapy published the Red Book which sets out the criteria for registration as a supervisor in family and systemic psychotherapy in the UK. The IFT supervision programme is a two year part-time training, is accredited by AFT and enables those who successfully complete the course to apply for supervisor registration with that body.

Entrance requirements

Candidates must have:

  • Completed a qualifying level training in family and systemic therapy or be able to show that they are at an equivalent level via UKCP registration
  • Usually consolidated that training for at least one year
  • Experience of using systemic ideas in supervision for at least two years
  • A commitment to be supervising regularly during the period of the course
  • A commitment to be doing family and systemic therapy during the period of the course

Course Structure

One and a half days per month (Mondays and Tuesdays) for 10 months in both Year 1 and 2. Consistent with AFT criteria, the course will be divided into four components:

  • Practice
  • Theory
  • Personal development
  • Ethics

Year 1 and 2

Practice workshops - these will explore the coherence of the course participants' ability to understand and translate theory into practice. This will be done via role plays, video and audio taped examples of course members' supervisory practice in their own professional community as well as the development of technique and individual style of supervision.

Tutorials - each trainee is allocated a tutor and tutorials take place once a term. The small size of the course also enables trainees to have individual time with the Course Chair when needed.

Supervision Project - Each course member will be required to organise a project in their professional community/agency which will allow them to develop their supervisory skills. The people being supervised should be post foundation level in terms of their family therapy/systemic expertise. Course staff will visit each course member in this context on five occassions during the course.

A range of supervisory models will be explored during the course.

Course curriculum and teaching will take into account the contexts of gender, race and culture, disability and sexual orientation.

Assessment

  • Written assignments, including a supervision practice dissertation of 5000-6000 words.
  • Portfolio of supervisory projects at end of Years 1 and 2

Presentation of work to a panel of Institute staff and the external examiner at the end of year 2. The present external examiner is Professor Arlene Vetere.

Significant parts of the course overlap with the Doctorate in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy.

There will be a mid-course at the end of Year 1.
